It was in the 1960s that United Detroit Theaters took over for remodeling, changing the façade of the theatre and slightly reducing the seating capacity. The Detroit Opera House or the Capitol Theater back then was renamed the Paramount Theater in 1929, and then renamed again in 1934 to the Broadway Capitol Theater. The interior and the façade of the theatre was styled with lavish decors, drapes and lighting to which it is still evident up to now. Howard Crane designed the theatre with an Italian Renaissance style. Howard Crane, who designed Detroit’s landmarks such as the Fox Theatre, State Theatre and Orchestra Hall. Having 3,500 seating capacity it was the fifth largest theater in the US during its time. Located in Downtown Detroit’s Entertainment District, the theatre formerly known as Capitol Theater opened its doors on January 12, 1922. That is why availability for Detroit Opera House parking will be a concern if not booked ahead of time with ParkWhiz. This historic theatre hosts opera, plays, dances and concerts.

Recently we’ve experienced increased pedestrian traffic on site and a rising popularity of bicycles, scooters and skateboards.Īs the safety of our patrons and visitors is our first priority all non-motorised vehicles including, but not limited to, bicycles (including commercial bicycle tours and hired bicycles), segways, skateboards and scooters must be dismounted at the Opera House site boundary, and safely walked, carried or parked while on site. At the Sydney Opera House we welcome more than 10,000 visitors each day.
